Create Your Personal Web Space
Each user account has 5MB of storage space available on the hometel.com system for web page storage. The use of this allocated space is determined by each individual customer’s discretion, within the guidelines of the hometel.com Acceptable Use Policy. For no additional cost, a customer can utilize this account space to setup a web presence on the Internet. This web presence can be used to display business or personal information, all accessible to the Internet world at “http://web.hometel.com/~ username “, where username is the individual customer’s user/email name.

If you have not developed a web page and need assistance, information can be found on the Internet by doing a search for HTML editors, or using a web page development program, such as Microsoft FrontPage. Once a web page is completed instructions below will guide you through installing the web page in your account location on the hometel.com system.

In order to begin using your personal web space, follow these simple steps:

1. Using FTP software, FTP to web.hometel.com. If you are unsure of whether you have FTP software, you may just click STARTàRUN, then in the “Open:” box, type “ftp web.hometel.com”. An MS-DOS window will appear, asking you for a username. Log in with your normal username and password. You are now logged into an area of our server in which only you have the authority to store, create, modify, and delete things. If you are using your web space simply to store files, you may now begin to transfer files to your web space. If you need assistance on the use of the FTP program, please consult: The University of Florida’s FTP user guide covers the basics. You can also Google for other more advanced instructions. for a fairly good explanation on how to use FTP. If you will be using your web space to host a personal website, continue to step two.

2. You must change directory into the “public_html” directory. In the rare event that it does not yet exist in your home directory, you must create it. But remember, this system is case-sensitive, and the name of the directory must be exactly as stated above (without the quotations). If the directory is not there, and you need help creating it, please refer to the URL in step 1.

3. This will be the root of your web directory. You may now begin to transfer you web site to this folder. There are several ways to make your web page work. First, you could name your index page (the first page that people see when they go to your website) “index.html”. Remember case-sensitivity. This way, all you have to do to access the site is go to http://web.hometel.com/~username and your website will appear. Or, if you prefer to name your index page something else, you would access it by going to http://web.hometel.com/~username/whatever-you-decide-to-name-your-page.something and your website will appear.

Tips:

Remember case-sensitivity when you build your web page. It is recommended to leave everything lower-case for the sake of simplicity. However, this is not law. If you run into problems, one of the first and easiest things to check is the case of your filenames.

For those who do not know how to program in HTML code, there are plenty of programs available specifically designed for the novice web designer. These include, but are not limited to, Microsoft Front Page, MS Front Page Express (comes with Windows 98), Net Objects Fusion, etc.
